1. Lange and Ahrens forgo SPD candidacy

spd, chairman, election
The number of possible candidates for the SPD chairmanship is declining. Simone Lange and Alexander Ahrens have withdrawn their double candidacy. They declared that instead, they want to support the candidacies of former Nordrhein-Westfalen Minister of Finance Norbert Walter-Borjans and parliamentarian Saskia Esken.

They also want to continue campaigning, just not for themselves but for the other candidates. Lange and Ahrens had previously campaigned that they want to bring the SPD closer to the public again. Lange was an opponent for the chairman election in April 2018, but lost against Andrea Nahles. Nahles’ resignation is the cause of these new elections.

2. AfD celebrates elections results in Sachsen and Brandenburg

election, afd
The AfD has obtained historic gains in Eastern Germany. In Sachsen, they grew from slightly below 10% to now 28% over a time period of five years. In Brandenburg they doubled their percentage to 24%. This means that the AfD has replaced the Linkspartei as the Eastern German People’s Party. The high percentages are largely also a result of the AfD being able to mobilize non-voters.

3. Merkel wants certificate trade instead of CO2 tax

climate, merkel, co2
Chancellor Angela Merkel has decided on a strategy facing climate change. Instead of introducing a CO2 tax, she wants to increase the trade with emission certificates. The government coalition is planning to decide on future measurements concerning the climate in a meeting on September 20th. The opinions on how to do that so far have been diverging.

A trade with certificates is already a standard in the energy sector and parts of the industry in the EU. Germany might now introduce a similar model for petrol, heating oil and natural gas.

4. Second vibrio bacteria death in Baltic Sea

vibrio, bacteria, baltic sea
After swimming in the Baltic Sea, for the second time this summer a person has died from a vibrio infection. The victim had been suffering from several chronic diseases and was, therefore, part of the risk group for infection.

Vibrio bacteria can cause deadly infections in people with an HIV condition or specific chronic illnesses. The same goes for the elderly, and those suffering from liver disease or alcohol addiction.

The Vibrio bacteria spread predominantly in saltwater above 20° Celsius (98° Farenheit). They invade the body via open wounds and can quickly cause severe inflammations. A quick treatment with antibiotics can mitigate the course of the disease.

Prior to that, a woman had infected herself in August with the disease during a swim in the Baltic Sea and died, and another one had infected herself shortly after without lethal consequences.

5. 2,000 people want to prove that Bielefeld doesn’t exist

bielefeld, competition

Approximately 2,000 people want to prove in a Million Euro competition about the Bielefeld conspiracy that the city in Ostwestfalen doesn’t exist. The deadline ended on Wednesday at midnight, and Bielefeld Marketing will now examine the arguments by the contestants together with experts.

The winner will be announced on September 17. Amongst the contestants, 300 of them are foreigners from countries like the USA, Canada, Russia, India, Japan, and New Zealand.

Bielefeld had offered one Million Euro at the end of August for proof that the city doesn’t exist. The marketing department of the city hopes to stop the conspiracy theories that have been circulating about the city for ages this way.

The origin of this point comes from 25 years ago when a satirical text surfaced and claimed that the city doesn’t exist. The joke became a sure-fire success. Now, the heads of the competition have stated that they are 99.9 percent sure to be able to refute any proof delivered by the contestants about the non-existence of the city.
